Studies have shown crafting and creating pieces of art impacts mental health in a positive way. In fact, a recent study published in the National Library of Medicine revealed crafting actually reduces the level of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. At CoreCivic's Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Tutwiler, Mississippi, residents are given the opportunity to participate in a Hobby Craft Program where they can work with everything from leather to beading and more.
"For me, working with leather is more than just making wallets and belts." One participant said. "It's a chance to create something real with my own hands. I can take a piece of raw hide and shape it, tool it, dye it and make it become something useful; something that can last."

Most participants of the Hobby Craft Program are able to work on their crafts and enhance their skills every day. Those who are interested in working with leather are able to work on their projects Monday through Friday.
"There's pride that comes with knowing that I made this; that I saw it through from the start to finish." One participant said.

Right now, there are nearly 200 residents participating in the program. Once they complete a piece, they're able to send it to family and friends as gifts or even send it to local shops.
